Woman chief secretary a rarity in Telugu states | Hyderabad News
HYDERABAD: While Telangana got its first woman chief secretary eight years after its formation, united AP had to wait till the turn of the millennium to see a woman occupy that post since the state came into being.
In 2002, Sathi Nair, a 1966 batch IAS officer, was appointed chief secretary by N Chandrababu Naidu, the then chief minister of Andhra Pradesh, replacing incumbent Swaminathan on the same day. The move, which was as sudden and dramatic as Santhi Kumari’s appointment replacing Somesh Kumar, had left bureaucratic circles surprised.
A decade after Nair took over as CS, Minnie Mathew, a 1976 batch IAS officer, was appointed to the post in 2012 by Kiran Kumar Reddy, the then CM. Incidentally, both IAS officers hailed from Kerala.
Nilam Sawhney became the first female CS of the residual state of Andhra Pradesh in 2019, after Jagan Mohan Reddy’s YSRCP stormed to power.
Of the 161 IAS officers in Telangana, there are around 40 women. “The interesting fact is that the number of women IAS officers increased after 2014, reflecting a change, which could indicate to women’s preference to choose services,” said a retired IAS officer from Telangana.
Six of all the women IAS officers currently working in Telangana joined the service before the millennium. Apart from the top three women, the list also includes Vani Prasad, Shailaja Ramaiyer and Anita Rajendra.
Among all, Smita Sabarwal, who is currently serving as secretary to chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, is the first female IAS officer to be assigned to Telangana in the new millennium (2001).
