ukraine: Confusion mars evacuation of students in Ukraine | Hyderabad News
HYDERABAD: The evacuation of some Indian students from war-torn Ukraine brought cheer to some. But for many who could not be part of the first batches to be evacuated, it was a difficult and confusing time.
Freezing temperatures notwithstanding, Indian students made a dash to neighbouring countries from Ukraine border. Those who coordinated with the embassy authorities could cross over.
Those students who managed to reach the border check point with Romania had to spend the night as there was no coordinated effort with the Indian embassy in Ukraine. Students complained that there were neither staff at the check point nor were they accessible on the telephone.
The Indian embassy on Saturday reiterated that Indian citizens should not move to any of the border posts without prior coordination with the government of India officials at the border posts on the helpline numbers given and of the emergency numbers of the embassy in Kyiv.
“We have had to spend the night in a bunker in Kyiv and it is scary. When will be we evacuated,” a Telugu student questioned. “For nine hours, we had to stay in the bunker. We heard the noise of bombs and of helicopters and rushed into safety into the bunkers. We cannot stay here anymore and we want to be sent back to India,” medical student Sumanjali, who hails from Karimnagar and is now stranded in Kyiv, told TOI.
Shouts of ‘Jai Hind’ rent the air as students seated in an aircraft to be transported back to India from Romania were given an emotional farewell by Indian ambassador to Romania Rahul Shrivastava.
The Indian students from Ukraine had a safe passage into Romania from Ukraine after which they were put on a special flight to India from Bucharest. Shrivastava went into the Air India special flight and spoke to the students. “Remember in life when things become difficult, remember this day, February 26, and everything will be fine,” he said. The students responded with a loud applause.
