Two Held For Cheating Officials | Hyderabad News
HYDERABAD: Two persons, including a 19-year-old animation engineering student, were arrested by cyber crime sleuths of Hyderabad on Tuesday for impersonating a senior bureaucrat from Telangana. They allegedly cheated several officials collecting money online.
Deputy commissioner of police (CCS) Gajarao Bhupal said Raghav Appu and Anand Kumar downloaded a picture of an officer from Telangana and used it as the display picture on a WhatsApp number. Later, they sent messages on WhatsApp to different government officials from this number. Many who received the message thought it was sent by the bureaucrat. In the message, the accused asked for money, citing that the bureaucrat was in urgent need of it.
Believing this to be true, a few persons sent money online after the accused shared bank details. Later, they realised they had been conned. After they lodged a complaint, sleuths nabbed the accused in Bengaluru.
Similarly, cyber crime police said they also nabbed 11 persons, including four women, after conducting a raid on a call centre in Noida since they were were duping persons on the pretext of calling from a public sector bank. They would offer redeeming earned points into cash. A victim from Kanchanbagh lodged a complaint saying that she lost Rs 1 lakh after believing she could earn money by converting the points, as claimed by the caller.
In this process, the caller made the victim disclose the OTP after initiating the cheating process.
