HYDERABAD: A 30-year-old woman was allegedly gang raped by five persons in an open place behind a bar in Dundigal during the early hours of Saturday. Police suspect the victim may be mentally unstable and she has been referred for medical examination. The five accused were arrested and a case registered against them.
Dundigal police said that the incident took place at around 3.30am, when the 30- year-old woman was alone next to the road. The five suspects, who were travelling in an autorickshaw, stopped there on seeing the woman alone and took her to an open place between D Pochampally and Gandimaisamma.
“It is not sure what the five men told her, but they took her to an open place behind a bar where the gang rape took place. We are still verifying exactly how many suspects were actually involved in the sexual assault,” Dundigal police said.
Meanwhile, some locals noticed what they thought was ‘suspicious activity’ and they alerted police by Dialling-100.
By the time police reached the spot, four persons fled from the scene, but with the help of two locals including the person who made a dial-100 call, police officials managed to nab one of the suspects from the crime scene.
When the police enqired with the victim, she gave inconsistent responses. Police immediately, shifted her to a nearby hospital for medical examination.
“The victim’s health condition is normal. But after talking to her, we got a feeling that she may not be completely stable mentally. She has been giving inconsistent answers when we asked for her what has transpired at the crime scene. She also gave vague replies when asked about her personal details,” said an investigator.
Police are waiting for the doctor’s opinion.
A few hours after the assault, police managed to nab the four other missing suspects and started interrogating them to find out what exactly happened.
“All the accused are friends and they live in various places near Dundigal. We are interrogating them to gather more details,” said an investigator. Police registered a gang rape case under section 376 D of the IPC.
(The victim’s identity has not been revealed to protect her privacy as per Supreme Court directives on cases related to sexual assault)
