Telangana Likely To Withdraw Nod To Cbi For Probe In State | Hyderabad News
HYDERABAD: Telangana is likely to withdraw the general consent given to the CBI to probe various corruption cases in the state. The state cabinet, which is meeting on Saturday, is set to discuss the matter in detail and issue a notification soon.
Chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, during his recent Bihar tour, had given a call to non-BJP ruled states to withdraw general consent contending that the investigating agency was being ‘misused’ by the Centre to target states.
Sources said the government’s move to withdraw the general consent was being contemplated in the wake of central agencies like Enforcement Directorate and income tax department intensifying their action against some companies in the state.
“If the general consent is withdrawn, the CBI has to seek permission from the state government to proceed in every case — even for a small action as per section 6 of the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act of 1946,” a senior official said.
West Bengal, Maharashtra, Punjab, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Kerala, Chhattisgarh and Mizoram are among the states which have done away with the general consent. When N Chandrababu Naidu was at the helm in Andhra Pradesh, general consent to the CBI was withdrawn in 2018, but YS Jagan Mohan Reddy-led YSRC government reversed it after he swept to power in 2019.
KCR said in Patna that all the central investigation agencies, including the CBI, were being misused by the Centre to target BJP’s political rivals in the country. “This should stop now and all the state governments should withdraw their consent to the CBI since policing is a state subject,” he said at the press meet with Nitish. KCR’s remarks came following demands by leaders of ‘Mahagathbandhan’ in Bihar to withdraw the general consent to the CBI.
In other important decisions during Saturday’s cabinet meeting, the government is likely to remove governor as chancellor of all universities in the state and appoint CM as chancellor. Sources said Telangana is all set to follow West Bengal, which a couple of months ago, had removed governor as chancellor of the universities.
