Telangana HC: Show way out for PG medical students | Hyderabad News
HYDERABAD: In what could come as a relief to displaced medical students, the Telangana high court on Thursday directed the National Medical Commission (NMC) and the state government to file affidavits within two weeks explaining how they propose to shift the PG medical students of MNR Medical College, Sangareddy, into other government and private medical colleges following the NMC’s decision to cancel admissions in MNR college.
A bench of Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Abhinand Kumar Shavili was hearing a petition filed by PG student Mangamuri Varshini and 47 other students of the college, who were worried about their future.
State health department counsel Nagesh Bhimpaka said the government has set up a committee to devise ways to adjust the displaced students. “The NMC has to permit us to create seats in each college that absorbs the displaced students,” he said.
Students’ counsel Sama Sandeep Reddy reminded that the NMC had cancelled admissions in three medical colleges, including MNR college. “The NMC gave guidelines in respect of the other two colleges on how to reallocate the students. The same was not given in respect of our college,” he said. NMC counsel Gorantla Sriranga Pujitha said same guidelines will be applicable to this college as well.
“It is 19 days and there is no light at the end of the tunnel,” Sandeep said. Referring to the guidelines, he said the principal secretary of the health department was authorised to accommodate the students in other colleges based on merit, availability of seats and infrastructure.
The number of students in each course should not cross 250 and the PG students can be attached to any government hospital for three months, Sandeep said. The NMC has also directed the MNR college to transfer to the state all the money it had collected. At this stage, Pujitha said the government can go ahead with the reallotment in the interest of the students. The case will come up for hearing after two weeks. Though TRR College students also filed a similar plea, they withdrew their petition on Thursday.
