Telangana Congress chief Revanth attends public hearing, opposes power tariff hike proposals | Hyderabad News

HYDERABAD: The Congress has made it clear to the Telangana State Electricity Regulatory Commission that it is totally opposing any proposal to increase the power tariff to burden the consumers and urged the commission not to allow any hike in the power consumption charges.
The Congress blamed the state government for pushing the two power Distribution Companies (Discoms) into Rs 60,000 crore losses and urged the TSERC to work out ways to pull out the Discoms from the losses without imposing burden on the domestic and other category of consumers.
“The state government is the biggest defaulter of southern and northern Discoms. The two Discoms had only Rs 11,000 crore debts in 2014-15. The state government which is extending Rs 16,000 crore worth subsidy to various categories of consumers has been giving only Rs 5,500-odd crore every year to the Discoms. As a result, every year the losses of Discoms are mounting,” Telangana Congress president A Revanth Reddy said.
Participating in the public hearing conducted by the TSERC to seek the opinion of people and other parties on proposed power tariff hike here, Revanth also urged the TSERC to take up suo moto the case of Srisailam Hydro electric power plant fire accident case in which 9 people were killed in August 2020 and bring it to the logical end.
“The CID investigation report on the fire accident has not been made public. What was the reason for the fire accident that killed nine people including engineers. Who is responsible for it. Has action been taken against any one,” Revanth asked?
On the power tariff hike proposals, Revanth said the property of the domestic consumer is attached if he or she fails to pay the bills beyond an extended time but the Discoms are not pursuing with the state government to pay the dues.
“Criminal cases should be booked against those who pushed the Discoms into losses. In seven years, the TRS government has pushed the Discoms into darkness. The two Discoms of Telangana are ranked 23rd (Southern Discom) and 33rd place (northern Discom) among its counterparts in the country, he alleged.
Revanth accused the state government of lying on solar power generation. The state government’s solar power installed capacity is only one MW and the private sector is producing more in the state. The Telangana government is purchasing solar power at a higher rate as Gujarat state is buying it at Rs 1.99 paise per unit compared to Rs 2.70 paise per unit by Telangana government.
In the losses due to power pilferage, Hyderabad stands first followed by Siddipet and Gajwel. The TSERC should look into the reasons for such losses in Siddipet and Gajwel, in addition to Hyderabad, said Revanth Reddy, reiterating that Congress is rejecting power tariff hike proposals.
