Summer in Spring: Hyderabad simmers in february for second time in decade | Hyderabad News
The all-time highest maximum temperature in February, recorded in the city, was 38.7 degree Celsius on February 23, 2016.
On Monday, the city’s Yousufguda area was the hottest at 34.6 degree Celsius followed by pockets like Borabanda, Khairatabad, Jubilee Hills, Begumpet, Musheerabad, Moosapet, Mehdipatnam, Charminar and LB Nagar all of which were also seen sweltering as mercury touched 34 degrees Celsius. And with IMD-Hyderabad predicting temperatures to remain consistently high even in the days ahead, there appears to be no respite in sight for residents from hot and sultry weather conditions. By the end of the week, mercury levels are likely to hit 36 degree Celsius, shows the IMD forecast.
“Early onset of summer heat isn’t a parameter to predict the heat conditions. But certainly, weather conditions will continue to rise in the coming days and months and on March 1 we can probably predict how the heat conditions for the summer will be. We can expect harsher summer conditions this year if the El Nino climate pattern is observed,” said K Nagaratna, director, IMD-Hyderabad.
La Nina and El Nino are two unusual climate patterns studied based on the abnormal increase or decrease in sea surface temperatures in the eastern tropical Pacific Ocean. Experts note that while the last three happened to be La Nina years, 2023 is likely to see an El Nino effect. This will result in harsher summers.
It is owing to these trends that Hyderabad witnessed heavy monsoon rains from 2020 to 2022. There is a probability that the pattern will change this year if the El Nino pattern picks up. “We are transitioning towards El Nino and post-April we might see hotter summer conditions after,” said weather expert GP Sharma, president of Skymet. IMD data also indicates that the minimum night temperatures will slowly begin to rise from 17 degree Celsius to 23 degrees Celsius this month.
