HYDERABAD: Blaming previous Congress governments at the Centre and when the state was united for the plight of farmers, agriculture minister S Niranjan Reddy said Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is coming to Telangana to participate in Rythu Sangharshana public meeting in Warangal only for political gains.
Niranjan Reddy said that as many as 1,58,117 farmers had taken their lives during the 10-year UPA rule between 2004 and 2014 as per the NCRB data. The minister, in an open letter, asked Rahul Gandhi to clarify on the issues raised by them before coming to the state to address a public meeting. “Before formation of Telangana, the Congress had done nothing for farmers and faced problems such as power crisis. When farmers demanded procurement of red jowar and took up agitations, the Congress government pumped bullets on them. Similarly, firing was ordered on those who demanded house sites at Mudigonda in which seven persons were killed. It is ridiculous the party is now holding a public meeting with farmers,” Niranjan Reddy said.
Government whip Balka Suman said while Congress was responsible for the region mainly due to its misrule for about 50 years, BJP cheated Telangana people by not fulfilling its promises made in the AP Reorganisation Act. “The ineffectiveness of Rahul Gandhi is helping BJP win polls time and again,” he said.
