HYDERABAD: For many people testing positive, it has been a chance discovery as they were asymptomatic and discovered their Covid-19 status while taking the test for purposes other than illness.
Routine Covid-19 test by people planning to travel or requiring it for schools/colleges has come out positive for many to their surprise.
Others taking the test after being exposed to an infected individual have also found themselves positive despite showing no symptoms in many cases.
“I had come to know that a relative tested positive two days back. As I had come in contact with him a couple of days before that, I went for a test with my family as a precautionary measure though we didn’t have symptoms. My entire family tested positive,” said Borra Srikanth, a private employee from Nizampet area.
Many others turning up for Covid-19 tests are the ones who have returned from Sankrathi travel or international destinations.
“We had taken a small trip to Godavari district for Sankranthi and went for a check up just to ensure that we are not positive. But unfortunately the entire group of five travellers tested positive,” said Alok Singh, a software professional.
Confirming that Sankranthi travellers make up for a large number of positive cases, Dr Marri Mallikarjun, nodal officer Covid-19, King Koti hospital, said, “Apart from people returning from holidays, some coming for tests before travel and also students are turning out to be positive. Often they do not have symptoms”. He added, “This category of patients, who incidentally turn out positive, would be between 20-25% of all the positive cases. Majority of those testing positive continue to be asymptomatic and are primary contacts of an infected person.”
