Peer pressure driving children to drugs: Hyderabad police commissioner | Hyderabad News
HYDERABAD: City police commissioner CV Anand on Saturday said that peer pressure is one of the key factors which is making children fall prey to drug abuse. He said that police have information on drug abuse happening in some international schools.
He made these comments during the launch of Drug Free Hyderabad campaign at Borabanda. Police said that they want to take up this campaign in five zones across Hyderabad and cover all colonies and 1,400 slums. As part of this campaign, surveillance on pubs, clubs and bars will be intensified.
“The drug abuse menace should be treated as a problem of everyone. One cannot distance themselves by thinking that none of their family members have the habit. Our children go to schools and colleges and we do not know what is happening after they leave home. Peer pressure is one of the factors which is making them get into drug abuse,” Anand said by adding that the role of parents is important in achieving the objective of Drug Free Hyderabad.
Similarly, Telangana home minister Mohammed Mahmood Ali, who was the chief guest, appealed to elders and others to alert the police if they have any inputs about drug suppliers or abusers.
“The objective of Drug Free Hyderabad to protect our children cannot be achieved without the support of the public,” he said.
Police said that ganja is mainly coming to the state from Vizag in AP, Chhattisgarh and Odisha. Similarly, cocaine is coming from Goa and Mumbai and the peddlers are mainly targeting people from the upper-middle class and rich.
Both the home minister and commissioner said that at the request of local public representatives, a new Borabanda police station will be created shortly. Presently, Borabanda area is under SR Nagar police station limits.
