Over 5,000 Undertrials Languishing In T Jails | Hyderabad News
As per the prison statistics- India 2020, released by National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) in December 2021, a total of 2,327 prisoners stayed in jail for less than 3 months whereas, five undertrials spent above five years in jail. In Telangana, there are nearly 7,000 prisoners, both undertrials and convicts.
Meanwhile, officials said that 10 undertrials, who were booked by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) or the state police in terror cases, accused linked to CPI Maoists or violation of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substance (NDPS) Act, spent more than 3 years in state jails. There are several undertrials, who got bail but still languish in jail since they could not afford surety.
“Generally, on an average 5% of undertrials have been in jail for around two years, whereas the majority of them will obtain bail and move out in less than 2 months. Getting bail in cases related to Unlawful Activities Prevention Act, violation of NDPS Act or murder is difficult,” an official in state police told TOI.
Former Telangana director general (prisons) VK Singh said that the judiciary alone cannot do much in reducing the cases of undertrials. “Government should support the judiciary in filling the vacancies of judges in all ranks. At the same time, the government should substantially improve the infrastructure of courts. Governments should walk the talk instead of giving statements. Another important thing is that the central government should also bring in amendments to avoid unnecessary adjournments in courts while dealing with the cases. Then naturally, the undertrial cases will come down substantially and the concerned courts can also take up the trial of cases and bring it to its logical conclusion,” Singh added.
