Nizamabad: Kcr ‘liquor Toon’ Case: Hc Stays Case Against Arvind | Hyderabad News
HYDERABAD: The Telangana high court on Friday stayed the criminal probe against BJP’s Nizamabad MP Dharmapuri Arvind for posting a cartoon of chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao holding a liquor bottle over alleged lax government curbs during New Year’s eve on December 31, 2021.
The case was registered by Banjara Hills police following a complaint by TRS social media convenor Y Satish Reddy in January 2022 accusing the MP of trying to defame the CM. The police had also filed a charge sheet in a local criminal court.
The MP had posted the cartoon while accusing the CM of being irresponsible in allowing New Year celebrations and liquor sales till late at night despite a surge in Covid cases fuelled by Omicron variant in December 2021. The Nizamabad MP subsequently filed a petition urging the HC to quash the FIR.
Senior counsel B Rachna Reddy said police slapped irrelevant sections dealing with causing animosity between different communities etc., though the cartoon and Facebook post never resulted in any such repercussions. After hearing the arguments, Chief Justice Ujjal Bhuyan stayed the case.
