Most Covid patients on ICU beds in Telangana are unvaccinated | Hyderabad News
Officials said the scenario is similar in both government and corporate health facilities, underscoring how everyone needs to take the jab to ward off severe Covid infection. As on Friday, 809 patients are on oxygen beds and 492 in Intensive Care Units (ICU) across the state.
“We can easily say that about 7 or 8 out of 10 patients in ICUs are either unvaccinated or partially vaccinated,” said a senior doctor from Telangana Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (TIMS). Authorities said these patients perhaps did not register or refused vaccination after the original list of beneficiaries was prepared. In many cases, patients took the first jab and refused to take the second one citing health complications.
Doctors said the number of patients requiring hospitalization or oxygen support may go up if the pandemic spirals out of control or more virus mutations take place.
Dr Sambit Sahu, medical director, KIMS Hospitals, said,”Mostly, those with comorbidities are developing severe symptoms and are getting hospitalized. Those who are fully vaccinated, there is no severity of disease.” he added, “Over 10 days, about 70% of patients in ICU are either unvaccinated or partially vaccinated.”
Dr Pradeep Panigrahi, medical director, SLG Hospitals, said three in four patients in ICU are unvaccinated or partially vaccinated. Doctors said many cases are breakthrough infections, a possible reason for not many needing oxygen support. B Nagender, superintendent, OGH said, “We have 30 suspected patients, but don’t have statistics on vaccination status.
