Moderate rain triggers torrent of misery in Hyderabad, worst yet to come | Hyderabad News

HYDERABAD: With the city lashed by rain for over 24 hours, several low-lying areas went under water and many roads were wrecked in its aftermath, triggering bumper-to-bumper jams on Saturday.
Rescue teams from NDRF, GHMC’s emergency monsoon teams and HMWSSB teams swung into action to pump out water from flooded localities in LB Nagar, Uppal, Malkajgiri, Saroornagar, JBS Circle and Rasoolpura.
Ramanthapur area, which recorded 7.6cm rain over two days, witnessed unrest after a road caved in due to the botched nala development project. Water gushed out from a cracked ‘Manjeera’ drinking water pipeline after the cave-in, triggering massive flooding. However, no casualties were reported. Seven two-wheelers and a car were wrecked at Hylam Colony in Jubilee Hills after trees uprooted by gusty winds fell on the vehicles.
In Old City, water entered houses at Chaderghat, a low-lying area next to Musi river. Other affected areas included Yakutpura, Talab Katta and Kalapathar.
As per Telangana State Development Planning Society (TSDPS) data, 1.5-6.4cm rain was recorded across GHMC limits over past two days. GHMC officials also alerted that heavy rainfall is likely to result in waterlogging in low-lying localities and areas were drains are clogged. Of 383 rain-related complaints received at GHMC’s helpline, 375 were solved, while eight are in the process, said officials.
Traffic crawled at Jubilee Hills checkpost, Rasoolpura, Madhapur, JBS, LB Nagar and Panjagutta due to waterlogged roads. Traffic police identified 184 flood-hit points across three commissionerates with most (123) situated in Hyderabad limits.
“Clogged drains are the key reason for waterlogging, not heavy rain. We saw instances of flooding on Friday across Begumpet, Raj Bhavan Road and even near CM office,” city-based activist Harish Daga told TOI. The damage was extensive in comparison to the intensity of rain.
“Borabanda saw the highest rainfall with 31mm, followed by Chanda Nagar, Ramchanderpuram and Serilingampally, which recorded 15.8mm, 15.5mm and 14.5mm respectively.
