Locals of Sainikpuri try to save park | Hyderabad News

HYDERABAD: To save the children’s park in Sainikpuri, locals have been fighting for the last six months.
Right from organising a new-age Chipko Movement, clinging to poorly pruned Ashoka, Peepal, and Neem trees in a bid to save them from being felled to meeting the officials, they have been up in arms to stop the privatisation of the park by constructing a sports complex.
“The GHMC has clearly said that the park cannot be given to any private party for any establishment. How can these people take decisions into their own hands and construct a sports complex on GHMC land? This has left me beyond shocked,” said Susie Tharu, a resident of the locality.
Residents said that while the plan to construct the complex was halted after the movement, which was held in January, for a couple of months, the managing committee of the area has recently passed the permit to build a tennis sports complex in the park.
“We are now planning to take this issue up with the GHMC and the forest department as previously the authorities had fined the managing committee for Rs 26,000 for not securing proper permission from the officials,” said Manoganya Reddy, a resident of the locality.
Approximately 15 trees were axed, and 15 to 20 others were trimmed to make room for a tennis court complex in January. Locals claimed the entire process was carried out unlawfully and blamed the Armed Forces Officers’ Cooperative Housing Society’s managing committee for not consulting residents before granting permission and hiring private individuals to cut down the trees, resulting in a significant environmental setback.
“The managing committee assured us that they have received a ‘verbal’ permission from GHMC, as the land is under GHMC’s control,” said Dr Ravi Tej, one of the four individuals supporting the plan to construct a tennis court, and resident of the area.
