Hyderabad: After manic Wednesday, uneasy peace in desolate Old City lanes | Hyderabad News

HYDERABAD: Stray cases of stone pelting, sloganeering and lathicharge were reported from the Shalibanda area late on Wednesday night, even as an eerie silence prevailed in most other parts of the Old City – hours before Raja Singh was detained on Thursday.
A few hundred protestors took to the streets post 9-9.30 pm to decry the BJP leader’s allegedly derogatory remarks and demand that he be given capital punishment.
While the situation remained peaceful for a long period of time, the police resorted to lathicharge when some agitators tried to take out a rally on the Shalibanda road.
Cops were even seen chasing some of them into the bylanes and in one instance, break down the door of a house to drag out protestors who were holed up there. At least 90 people were taken into custody for pelting stones at cops. As videos of the police lathicharge went viral across social media platforms, they attracted sharp reactions from different quarters. This included Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi who criticised police.
Police also forced shops and other establishment to shut down at 8.30pm in Old City and other parts of the city.
“The youth were released from Kanchanbagh police station at 1.30am. In one case, police used disproportionate force and barged into a home and detained five youths. This isn’t acceptable. They’ve been released on my representation. I asked our corporators to drop the youth back home,” Asad said.
Amid the tension, most roads leading up to Charminar and its surrounding areas wore a deserted look as cops restricted the movement of people. The usual hustle bustle of the busy stretch, dotted with eateries that usually remain open till the wee hours of the day, was missing. Normalcy returned to the area only post midnight.
While the area saw no trouble in Thursday, police officials said that they have made tight security arrangements for Friday namaz.
