HYDERABAD: A woman who developed ‘acute hepatic failure’ and went into coma for two weeks had a miraculous recovery, within six hours of liver transplant.
The 28-year-old woman had delivered a baby six months ago. Despite treatment, her condition had worsened and by the time she had presented with the acute condition, she had viral hepatitis.
“After taking native medicine her condition worsened and she went into coma with frequent seizures. She also had low platelet count and poor blood clotting. It was in this challenging scenario she was brought to us,” said Dr Govindverma, chief hepatologist, Pace hospitals.
While the patient was put on super urgent transplant list under the Jeevandan programme, live donor transplantation was decided. “The golden hours before transplantation are very crucial as the patient may collapse due to bleeding in the brain.
As her bilirubin was high, our team performed an urgent liver dialysis – plasma exchange to bring her bilirubin down and reduce brain swelling,” said Dr Phani Krishna, transplant surgeon.
Despite the transplant going smoothly, doctors had kept their fingers crossed due to her condition. “Her miraculous rapid recovery from coma for 2 weeks to conscious within 6hours of transplant was very heartening,” added Dr Madhusudhan transplant surgeon.
