College fee issue: 4 suffer burn injuries after student douses himself with petrol, catches fire in Hyderabad | Hyderabad News

HYDERABAD: Narayana College’s Ramanthapur branch principal, its administrative officer, and two student leaders suffered burn injuries after the student leader, who came at the behest of a student Sai Narayana of that college, doused himself with petrol inside the principal chambers and it accidentally caught fire.
Since the college allegedly refused to give a transfer certificate (TC) to Sai, since he failed to clear 2nd year college fee, the incident snow-balled into three persons getting major injuries.
Deputy commissioner of police (East Zone) G Chakravarthy told TOI that 23-year-old Sandeep, Venkatesh Chary, and administrative officer Ashok Reddy were shifted to hospital, where they have been undergoing treatment.
Principal though suffered burn injuries was treated as outpatient. “It was Sandeep and Venatesh Chary, who went to the college at the behest of Sai. Sai did not suffer burn injuries,” he said. Sandeep, a former ABVP leader, is presently working in a company linked to online finance.
Sai , who recently completed intermediate 2nd year from this college, in the past few days went to the college on a few occasions to collect this TC. But the college authorities claimed that they will not issue the certificate until the fee arrears are cleared. Sai is supposed to attend EAMCET counselling, which is scheduled to start on August 21. Similar to Sai, there were some more persons who too were allegedly being forced to clear their due.
Sai took the help of Sandeep to talk to the principal and help him out get the TC. When Sandeep was talking to the principal, there were several other parents in the room who too were trying to seek time or concession from the principal. “Sandeep tried to threaten the college authorities by dousing himself with petrol. But he caught fire accidentally, since there was a burning diya close to him. After the petrol fell on the diya, at one go it caught fire and spread in the room,” assistant commissioner of police Srinivas Reddy told the media.
There were nearly 20 people inside the room. Immediately, after Sandeep was caught on fire, they tried to come out but since it was a narrow door, few others also suffered minor burn injuries before they managed to come out in panic. “I joined my son in the college only after the authorities accepted for a fee of Rs 40,000. I already paid Rs 20,000. Now, after the completion of 1st year, the college staff unfairly claim that the total fee is Rs 1 lakh. I suffered injuries on my hand and head,” an agitated parent told the media out of the college.
Immediately, the college staff reached out to the three persons who were caught in fire but doused the fire and they were shifted to Gandhi hospital, from there they were shifted to DRDO Apollo.
