Brs: Hyderabad MLC poll: BRS piggyrides MIM to win, BJP on weak turf | Hyderabad News
HYDERABAD: The friendly combine of AIMIM and BRS has an absolute majority to win the ensuing election to Hyderabad MLC local authorities constituency.
Polling will be held from 8 am to 4 pm on March 13 and counting of votes is on March 16.
The voter list published by the district election authority has a total of 118 electors comprising MPs, MLCs, MLAs and corporators from Hyderabad district. The AIMIM has over 52 voters, including 42 corporators, seven MLAs, two MLCs and an MP in Asaduddin Owaisi from Hyderabad Lok Sabha constituency.
BRS has a total of 41 voters in the district, including 18 corporators, eight MLAs, 10 MLCs and five Rajya Sabha members. BJP has 25 voters comprising one MLA in T Raja Singh from Goshamahal, 23 corporators and one MP in Union minister G Kishan Reddy from Secunderabad.
Congress has none as all its three corporators were elected from districts other than Hyderabad. Though the total number of votes in Hyderabad district should have been 127, it came down to 118 as the term of eight elected civilian ward members of the Secunderabad Cantonment Board has expired. Also, BJP lost its Mehdipatnam corporator Devara Karunakar who died recently and a bypoll is yet to be announced.
The three-term sitting MLC Amin Jafri of AIMIM had won the election unopposed in 2017 with the support of the BRS and is scheduled to complete his term on May 1.
Though Jafri is most likely to be fielded by AIMIM this time as well, party general secretary Ahmed Pasha Quadri said Owaisi along with party MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi and senior leaders will take a call soon.
Sources said leaders from BRS and AIMIM together will file two sets of nomination papers once the Majlis party announces its candidate. BJP is unlikely to field a candidate as it does not have numbers to even put up a strong fight.
BJP state vice-president G Manohar Reddy told TOI that the party leadership will take a final decision on fielding a candidate. “We will expose how the BRS has been supporting the AIMIM. BRS support to the AIMIM again vindicates our stand that the steering of the BRS is in the hands of the AIMIM,” he said.
The last date for filing of nominations is February 23, scrutiny is on February 24 and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is February 27.
