BJP is avoiding discussion over price rise, unemployment, GST: Telangana Congress MP Uttam Kumar Reddy | Hyderabad News
HYDERABAD: Nalgonda MP N Uttam Kumar Reddy of the Congress on Saturday charged some of the BJP MPs including union minister Smriti Irani of heckling AICC president Sonia Gandhi which he termed as demeaning and disgrace to the Parliamentary form of democracy in the country.
He strongly condemned the BJP MPs misbehaviour. Though Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhary immediately apologised for his remarks on President Draupadi Murmu admitting it as an inadvertent slip of the tongue, the BJP made it a big issue and tried to drag Sonia Gandhi into the controversy.
“After the Lok Sabha was adjourned, union minister Smriti Irani and a few other BJP MPs heckled her. By raising slogans against Sonia Gandhi, a senior MP and president of a national party and a 75-year-old woman, BJP has stooped down to a new low,” he alleged.
Uttam accused the BJP of trying to derive political mileage by constantly referring to the caste and gender of Murmu who is holding the highest constitutional post of the country. The day Draupadi Murmu got elected, she became the President of the entire country. We are all proud of her being a woman and she hailed from the Adivasi background. But today, she is the representative and leader of all Indians, irrespective of their caste, religion, region or gender. Draupadi Murmu is our President. We will honour and respect her,” he said.
The Congress MP asked BJP leaders to stop enacting the dramas of ‘defending President Murmu’. “She is the President of India and the Commander-in-Chief of our armed forces. She doesn’t need any sympathy and protection from BJP leaders. Every citizen of this country loves and respects her. Therefore, BJP leaders must stop giving statements which reduce the stature of the President of India,” he demanded.
Uttam said the BJP government does not want to discuss in the Parliament the price rise, imposition of GST on food items, unemployment, poor state of the economy, agnipath scheme, and other issues being faced by the people. “As many as 10 days have passed since the beginning of monsoon session and none of the issues concerning the common man has been discussed. The BJP government is scared of having any discussion on these issues,” he alleged.
He described the suspension of opposition MPs from both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha as unfair. “When BJP was in opposition, its leaders including Arun Jaitley and Sushma Swaraj had stated that holding a protest in the well of the House was a form of Parliamentary democracy. But today the BJP is finding fault with the same act,” he said.
