Andhra Pradesh’s coolest place: Chintapalle in ASR district records season’s lowest temperature at 1.5°C | Visakhapatnam News

VISAKHAPATNAM: With mercury plummeting to 1.5 degrees Celsius, Chintapalle in Alluri Sitarama Raju (ASR) district on Sunday recorded the lowest temperature this season.
Thin ice sheets were seen on grasslands and vehicles that were parked in the open places by the visitors in a few parts in ASR on Sunday morning. The dense fog has affected vehicular traffic for hours in many parts of the ASR district.
The Regional Agriculture Research Station (RARS) at Chintapalle in ASR district, the primary weather station in ASR district, recorded the minimum temperature at 1.5 degrees Celsius on Sunday. The locals said that they have felt freezing like cold on Saturday night and Sunday morning.
This is for the second time the temperature dipped to such a low in the past five years. On December 31, 2018, Chinatapalle had recorded 1.5 degrees Celsius.
The locals in ASR district guess the temperature of the surrounding areas of the Chintapalle by deducting 1 to 2 degree Celsius from the recorded temperature at RARS.
Senior scientist at RARS at Chintapalle, Dr M Suresh Kumar said the lowest temperature zero degree Celsius was recorded on January 6, 1992, it was the lowest temperature recorded at Chintapalle in 30 years, he added.
The RARS officials said that the temperature dipped to 1 degree Celsius on December 30, 1998, January 5, 1999, January 17, 2003 and January 15, 2012.
We are guessing the mercury dipped to around 1 degree Celsius on Sunday at Lammasingi village, which was popular as Andhra Pradesh’s Kashmir. Lambasingi under Chintapalle Mandal in ASR district was located at 3,000 feet altitude. Chintapalle was located at a height of 2,800 feet and Araku Valley 2,700 feet, said V Raju, a resident of Lammasingi.
The minimum temperature also dropped in Mimumuluru, Paderu, Tajangi, Vanjangi, Araku Valley, Paderu, Pedabayalu and Munchingput and a few other localities in ASR district .
IMD officials and weather experts have said the temperature will drop further during the coming days in most parts of the state. People will witness more cold days during the Sankranti festival in January.
As per the IMD, Kalingapatnam in Srikakulam district recorded 11.2 degrees Celsius on Sunday, followed by 12.5 degrees Celsius in Nandigama, 13.5 degrees Celsius in Amaravati and 14.2 degrees Celsius in Vizag city. Most parts of the state have recorded the minimum temperature of below 20 deg Celsius on Sunday.
Majority of the locals in ASR district have preferred to stay indoors due to bone-biting cold and dense fog whereas the tourists at various parts in ASR district were seen huddling around the bonfires during the morning hours to keep themselves warm.
