Vigil held for Hyderabad student who died in accident in Winnipeg | Hyderabad News

HYDERABAD: A 22-year-old student from Hyderabad, Javed Musharaff, who went to pursue studies in Canada, died when his bicycle collided with a snowplow in Winnipeg on December 15.
Musharaff’s last rites were performed in Canada itself later.
An automotive technology student, he was studying at the University of Manitoba’s Red River College Polytechnic. A community vigil was held for Musharaff at the university, which he had joined two years ago.
When the mishap took place near Mission Street and Pilinquet Street at St Boniface in Winnipeg, paramedics had attended on a severely injured Musharaff, but he did not survive. His funeral was held at the Grand Mosque at Winnipeg.
Subsequently, a vigil was held at the University of Manitoba Fort Garry Campus on December 23.
While none of his family members from India could travel to Canada for the funeral, a relative, who lived in Canada, also could not proceed to Winnipeg from Calgary due to the inclement weather.
“He was the nephew of a close friend of mine. We could not travel from Calgary due to continuous flight cancellations,” Mohammed Majid, who lives in Canada, said. Other international students who could not attend the vigil in person lighted candles in their homes.
A climate activist, Durdana Islam, chairperson of Waverly Climate Action Team in Canada, who teaches at the University of Winnipeg, tweeted saying: “Rest In Peace Javed. Sorry, we could not make our roads safer for you to bike.”
She said police were investigating the matter and looking for witnesses. “So please spread the word,” she appealed.
Musharaff was reportedly hit by a front-end loader clearing snow.
“Javed was an international student who came here to follow his dream,” another student said. While thanking all who attended the vigil, Durdana Islam said, “The community got together and it shows how much he was loved.”
