HYDERABAD: Veteran BJP leader and former MP Chandupatla Janga Reddy breathed his last on Saturday. He was the first BJP MP from the southern states post the formation of the saffron party in 1980.
He was 87. Janga Reddy defeated former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao from Hanmakonda Lok Sabha constituency in 1984 general elections. Janga Reddy and AK Patel were the only BJP candidates elected to the Lok Sabha in 1984 in the aftermath of then PM Indira Gandhi’s assassination. He was also elected to the legislative assembly in undivided Andhra Pradesh thrice.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tributes to Janga Reddy saying he devoted his life to public service. “Reddy Garu was an effective voice for the BJP at a very critical phase of the party’s trajectory. Spoke to his son and expressed condolences. Om Shanti (sic),” Modi tweeted.
“C Janga Reddy Garu devoted his life to public service. He was an integral part of the efforts to take Jana Sangh and BJP to new heights of success. He made a place in the hearts and minds of several people. He motivated many Karyakartas. Saddened by his demise,” he further said.
