Serum Institute of India to set up centre of excellence in Hyderabad to tackle future pandemics | Hyderabad News
HYDERABAD: The world’s largest vaccine manufacturers, Serum Institute of India (SII), on Sunday announced the establishment of Dr Cyrus Poonawalla Centre of Excellence in infectious diseases and pandemic preparedness, in Hyderabad. The centre will be located within the premises of the city’s Indian Institute of Public Health (IIPH), a release issued by SII stated.
Armed with state-of-art technology, the centre will work as a centralised location for information, resources, and support during times of public health emergencies. It will serve as a hub for public health education, outreach, and provide real-time information and updates on current epidemics, the release stated. Run by a team of experienced healthcare professionals, the centre will offer resources and support to those affected by the outbreaks.
Reiterating it, Adar C Poonawalla, CEO of SII said that the centre will work on a variety of things like, “monitoring and tracking infectious diseases, coordination of response efforts with local healthcare providers and provision of information and support for individuals and families affected by epidemic.” Lauding the efforts of the state, he added how “Telangana is dedicated to providing its residents with a high quality of life and a bright future”.
While discussion about setting up this centre started during the World Economic Forum in Davos in May 2022, the formal announcement was made after a virtual meeting with Poonawalla and Telangana minister K T Rama Rao on Sunday. Jayesh Ranjan, principal secretary, industries and commerce (Telangana) and Shakthi M Nagappan, director lifesciences, were also present.
“The opening of this centre marks a significant step forward in our efforts to protect the health and well-being of our community. By centralising our resources and expertise, we can ensure a quick and effective response to any public health emergency. Through this investment, I am delighted to welcome SII to Hyderabad, which is regarded as the vaccine capital of the world,” said KTR.
According to Prof Srinath Reddy of IIPH-Hyderabad, the centre will help strengthen “India’s capacity to anticipate, avert and attenuate pandemic threats through improved prevention, prediction, preparation and prompt response”. “Other infectious diseases of concern too will be addressed through a public health guided multi-sectoral response,” he added.
