Same-gotra Couple Seek Police Cover | Hyderabad News
HYDERABAD: A couple from the same caste, who have been excommunicated for marrying against the wishes of the woman’s family over ‘gotra’ violation, have approached cops seeking protection.
The couple in their early twenties from Shahinayatgunj had a Arya Samaj wedding in July 2020. They belong to the same community and caste but the woman’s family refused to accept the marriage as it violated the ‘gotra’ and had them excommunicated from the community, police said. “My parents and other family members began harassing us on social media by putting up abusive posts. They also threatened me to return to the family. Recently, we came to know that they were threatening to kill us, so I approached police requesting them to initiate legal action,” the woman said.
Based on the plaint, a case was registered for criminal intimidation. “We called the family and community members for counselling. We warned them to mend their ways,” Afzulgunj inspector M Ravindar Reddy said.
