Road caves in at Hyderabad’s Chaknawadi, parked vehicles crash inside | Hyderabad News
HYDERABAD: A signification portion of Chaknawadi bylane road in the Goshamahal area caved in resulting in three minor injuries and parked vehicles and pushcarts crashing inside on Friday afternoon.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident happened at around 12 pm when some of the residents standing on the road felt a ‘tremor’ beneath their feet and immediately jumped to the side and within seconds, the road caved in.
“We were having tea at the stall and saw two persons sitting outside a tiffin centre falling from their chairs. The road collapsed at the same time, but luckily there weren’t any major injuries,” Chandan Krishna, who witnessed the incident told TOI.
E Rajesh, who parked his auto trolley at the crash site recollects that he felt the ground shaking as he and his workers were unloading crates of vegetables. “We were quick to move out of the way but helplessly witnessed my trolley and Rs 30,000 worth of vegetable crash into the road ditch that was created. We couldn’t risk salvaging the situation as there was fear that the road could cave in further below,” Rajesh said while expressing his hopes for compensation.
Along with his trolley, two more SUVs – one parked next to the trolley and another entering the road crashed inside. Soon, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) deployed Disaster Response Force (DRF) teams to the spot along with a crane, and three JCB excavators and cordoned off the road. Officials note that the cause behind the road’s collapse is yet to be ascertained, however, it could be a case of a water pipeline burst or the shutting of the sewage which was otherwise open could have formed gas that had weakened the road.
“We are yet to ascertain the cause. Right now, we will dig further to identify the reason and take remedial measures and only then we would lay a new road,” Goshamahal circle’s deputy executive engineer K Venkat Narayana told TOI. Meanwhile, a local congress corporator from Lingojiguda division Rajasekhar Reddy staged a protest in the street demanding that municipal minister KT Rama Rao visited the spot and blamed the GHMC for laying a faulty road. Locals note that the road was laid 40 years ago and while regular recarpeting has occurred, there were no such problems so far.
