Over half Covid breakthrough cases moderate | Hyderabad News

HYDERABAD: A recent study has shown that 48% of the symptomatic breakthrough infections were rated moderate, while 31% were mild and 25% were severe in the country, said Union minister of health and family welfare Bharati Pravin Pawar.

In fact, the situation in the state is no different, where many breakthrough infections were rated moderate.
Pawar was responding to a question in the Lok Sabha on whether the vaccinated are getting affected by the coronavirus infection.
“Immunity acquired from natural Covid-19 infection or vaccines is not absolute according to emerging evidence,” she stated in a reply. “Reinfections following natural coronavirus infections as well as vaccine breakthrough infections are not uncommon,” the minister added.
Breakthrough infections were observed in 7.91% of the sample population in a study involving 1,112 vaccinated people who had at least one dose of either Covaxin or Covishield, she said. The study by Arora G and others was published in the Journal of Medical Virology in March 2022.
Out of 88 post-vaccination SARS-CoV-2 breakthrough infections, 90.91% were symptomatic cases and the remaining 9.09% were asymptomatic. Among symptomatic breakthrough infections, 31.25% were mild, 43.75% moderate and 25% severe, Pawar said.
According to the World Health Organization, a vast majority of infections are observed in unvaccinated populations, and if breakthrough infections occur in vaccinated persons, they are in most cases less severe than those seen in unvaccinated persons.
Meanwhile, several cases of second and third time infections in vaccinated people are currently being seen and although there is no study to prove it, experts point out that second and third infections tend to be a little more serious than the initial one, especially if the patient was infected in the first or third wave of Covid.
“This does not stand for people infected in the second wave as they had more severe infection then due to the Delta variant. Currently, many patients who were asymptomatic are reporting symptoms during the second and third infection. The ones who had a mild infection previously are now seeing moderate infection,” said a doctor from the state-run Gandhi hospital.
