HYDERABAD: Mancherial municipal commissioner Nallamalla Balakrishna was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly abetting the suicide of his 30-year-old wife G Jyothy, who was found hanging from the ceiling fan in their flat in the town on Tuesday.
Balakrishna was booked under sections of IPC and Dowry Prohibition Act and sent to judicial remand.
Police, who spoke to the two children of the couple in the presence of Childline 1098 officials, were in for a shock when their six-year-old daughter told them that her father hit her mother on Tuesday morning. Jyothy’s family members alleged that Balakrishna had been harassing her for additional dowry. The couple got married in 2014. Jyothy’s mother Raveendra Kumari told cops that at around 8.45 am on Wednesday, her daughter called her up saying Balakrishna had threatened to kill her.
A t 1.45pm, my son-inlaw called to inform me that Jyothy had hanged herself,” Kumari said. Though there was no suicide note, Kumari in her complaint to police alleged that her daughter was physically and mentally harassed for additional dowry by Balakrishna and his family. “Balakrishna was unemployed at the time of the wedding. We gave him three acres of agriculture land and five tola gold as dowry. Balakrishna later secured a police constable job. He, however, went on leave to prepare for the state civil services examination for which we supported him financially. In 2018, he landed a group II job. After securing the job, Balakrishna began harassing my daughter. ,” Kumari said.
Mancherial assistant commissioner of police B Tirupathi Reddy said Jyothy sent a message to Balakrishna on WhatsApp at 11.30 am. “He was on official work and before he could see the message, Jyothy deleted it. At around 12.30 pm, he returned home and found the door locked from inside. When Jyothy did not open the door for a long time and did not answer the phone calls, Balakrishna along with a neighbour forcibly opened the door latch. He found Jyothy hanging from the ceiling fan with a stole,” the ACP said. Police said appropriate legal action would be initiated against the other accused after gathering evidence.
