Recalling the panic that briefly gripped the locality after multiple residents started to take ill, C Rathnamma, said: “I was shocked when my son suddenly started to feel nauseous and diarrhoea. It became so severe that we had to move him to the hospital. He had not eaten any outside food so it has to be the water.”
In another case family members of Leela V said that both mother and her four-year-old daughter had to be rushed to hospital when they started vomiting. “Given that so many people started showing similar symptoms clearly means that there’s a common cause. It is almost obvious it is the water in the area,” the family member said.
The HMWS&SB officials who who arrived at the site on Friday checked all water and sewerage lines, to assess the complaints. They even collected water samples and sent them to water board’s own quality assurance and testing wing to check for pollution levels.
Meanwhile, the Telangana medical and health department also deployed teams at the basti for a house-to-house symptomatic survey. “We have collected water samples from three sources — one from the direct source of the reservoir, one from distribution water lines and a third from consumer, and sent it to the Institute of Preventive Medicine (IPM) for biological tests.
