IIT-Hyderabad develops first indigenous 5G technology | Hyderabad News

HYDERABAD: In a major boost to India’s 5G capabilities, a maiden 5G data call was developed by researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology, Hyderabad (IIT-H) and WiSig Networks using indigenously developed open radio access network (ORAN), a 5G compliant technology.

Till date, India has imported 2G, 3G and 4G technologies. Even though some of these wireless equipment are getting assembled in the country, the entire technology, intellectual property (patents) and design know how was not available locally.
Researchers at the IIT-H said that they have developed these 5G technologies indigenously, there by bringing India into forefront for the 5G and beyond. The call was made using MIMO capable base station that supports 100MHz bandwidth in the 3.3-3.5 GHz frequency band.
“Equipped with these capabilities, India can be self-reliant in designing and manufacturing wireless broadband equipment and play an increasingly important role in future generation technologies, products and services,” said Prof Kiran, dean research and development.
“IIT-H and WiSig developed more than 100 5G patents and 15 of which are declared as 3GPG standards essential patents to TSDSI,” said Prof BS Murty, director, IIT-H.
