Hyderabad: Fire engulfs hospital, 2 babies among 19 rescued | Hyderabad News

HYDERABAD: Panic struck patients when a major fire broke out at a private hospital in Saleem Nagar, Moosarambagh, on Saturday morning. However, luckily 19 persons, including two newborns, had a lucky escape.
At 7.30 am, a call landed at the fire department helpline informing about the fire. The nearby fire tender from the Malakpet station fire office was dispatched to the spot.
By then, fire had engulfed the health facility and thick smoke filled the building. Officials suspected that several persons might have got trapped inside the building. The hospital has two building blocks (front building is G+2, while the rear G+3). The fire accident took place in the front building.
By the time the fire tender reached, 12 persons, on noticing the fire and smoke inside the hospital, managed to come out using an interconnected bridge between the two building blocks.
“After we reached the spot, on one side, we started fire-fighting operations and, on the other, some fire personnel started to break glass panes to diffuse the smoke. When we managed to enter the building, on the first floor we found two new mothers, who gave birth two days ago, struggling to rescue themselves amid thick some,” Malakpet station fire officer J Goverdhan Reddy told TOI. Along with the new mothers, their attendants were also present in the general ward.
Immediately, the firemen shifted them to safety. “The fire first broke out on the ground floor and it rapidly spread to other floors as a lot of papers and other combustible material were dumped. Apart from this, there was false ceiling too,” Goverdhan said.
“If there was no bridge, all the 19 persons would have got trapped inside the building. The front block is an old building, which is used for both hospital and residential purpose. There is an interconnected bridge on first and second floors,” fire officials said.
Five fire tenders were pressed into service to douse the fire and it took 2 hours and 20 minutes to bring the blaze under control. Most part of the first and second floor of the front building was badly damaged in the accident.
