HYDERABAD: Hundreds of sanitation workers of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) staged a protest demanding pending salaries at its headquarters on Thursday. At least 300 workers showed up outside the GHMC commissioner’s office with placards criticising CM K Chandrasekhar Rao.
Officials soon intervened and gave an assurance to pay the dues after which the protestors dispersed.
Addressing the media, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Employees Union (GHMEU) president U Gopal said that the biometric machines rented by the civic body were on the blink, resulting in salary loss for several workers. He demanded that the GHMC buy its own biometric machines for attendance to avoid unfair cuts.
“Around 700 people have been fired and they were not even paid. We have issued multiple representations to the GHMC commissioner and zonal officers on several occasions, but nothing was done,” Gopal said.
He said that when CM promised to even make outsourced employees permanent, it was unfair to remove hundreds of existing workers.
