GMR gets nod for Hyderabad airport till 2068 | Hyderabad News
HYDERABAD: GMR Group has bagged an extension from Union ministry of civil aviation (MoCA) that will enable it to operate Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) at Hyderabad till March 2068.
GMR Infrastructure Ltd (GIL) on Wednesday informed the bourses that its step-down subsidiary, GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd (GHIAL), has received a letter of confirmation from MoCA extending the term of concession agreement for operating RGIA for a further 30 years — from March 23, 2038, up to March 22, 2068.
This extension, GIL said, is included in the terms of the concession agreement dated December 20, 2004. RGIA, which was the country’s first greenfield airport to be built under the public private partnership model, was commissioned in just 31 months. The airport, which was inaugurated in March 2008 with an initial capacity of 12 million passengers per annum, was handling 21 million passengers per annum in 2019 before Covid-19 struck.
With a major expansion underway, the airport, which has emerged as a gateway to South and Central India, is set to see capacity go up to 34 million passengers per annum soon. As per airport master plan, RGIA can increase ultimate capacity to over 100 million passengers per annum in phases, GIL said, adding that it also has a cargo handling capacity of 1.5 lakh tonnes per annum.
