Drunk-driving offenders asked to clean up Visakhapatnam beach as punishment | Visakhapatnam News
VISAKHAPATNAM: The special metropolitan magistrate court in Visakhapatnam city on Tuesday told 52 drunk-driving offenders to clean up RK beach in the city as a punishment.
ADCP (Traffic) Sheik Arifullah said that as per the directions of the court, the traffic rules violators collected litter at a few locations at RK Beach.
Considering the facts and circumstances of the case, the court was of the opinion that instead of imposing monetary fines upon the accused, it is appropriate to order the accused to render social service to the society at large, thereby there will be some sort of the reformation in the mindset of the accused, the police said.
It may be recalled that a few years ago, the court had directed 36 drunk-driving offenders to perform traffic duties at main junctions like Jagadamaba, Daba Gardens and Gajuwaka in the city. They were also told to display placards advising motorists not to drive under the influence of alcohol and not to violate the traffic norms.
Speaking to TOI, a police officer said that among the 52 persons, who carried out the beach clean-up drive, a few were students, some were employees in private firms, auto-rickshaw drivers and others.
