C-section deaths remain a mystery for investigators in Hyderabad | Hyderabad News

HYDERABAD: A day after two women – 26-year-old Sirivennela and 27-year-old Shivani – lost their lives following C-section deliveries at the Malakpet Area hospital in the city, the cause of their deaths remains inconclusive. The viscera samples have been sent for chemical examination by health authorities.
While the post-mortem reports are yet to be submitted, the investigation team has not been able to draw any conclusions. Speaking to TOI, Telangana Vaidya Vidhana Parishad (TVVP) commissioner, Dr Ajay Kumar, said: “The cause of death could not be found in the post-mortem.

Even the vitals of the two women were normal before surgery and we are unable to understand the cause of death. Visceral samples have been sent for further investigation to the forensic science laboratory (FSL). All possibilities like toxicity and drug interaction are being looked into so that the exact cause of death can be ascertained.”
Meanwhile, sources at the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) where eight other women who underwent C-section surgeries on the same day at the Malakpet area hospital were kept under observation, indicating a high possibility of sepsis in the women. The women have been put on high-end antibiotics as per insiders.
“The antibiotic being used – Morepenem – is a higher-order antibiotic. The very fact that this is being used indicates some kind of infection. It looks like there was some issue with the sterilization of equipment used during the surgery,” said a senior government doctor. The hospital’s infection committee held an emergency zoom meeting on Saturday, which also indicates that authorities are suspecting a hospital-borne infection.
Meanwhile, the turn of events seems to have shaken the faith of family members in the government healthcare machinery. One of the eight other women, who were operated on the same day and kept in NIMS after the incident, left the hospital against medical advice.
On Saturday morning, the family decided to get her treated under a known private practitioner and took leave against medical advice. The family cited a lack of trust in the government hospital and despite counselling by authorities went away.
