aqi: City Sees Rise In Moderateair Pollution Days In 3 Yrs | Hyderabad News
Hyderabad: The number of days with ‘moderate’ air quality increased in Hyderabad over the last three years with city experiencing 155 days of moderate air pollution in 2021, according to the air quality index (AQI) data.
The data of the last three years shows that the city had acceptable levels of air pollution for a few days in 2019. The AQI is divided into six categories— good, satisfactory, moderate, poor, very poor and severe pollution days.
On the plus side, the city has never had severe or very poor air quality days. However, the city had 76 ‘good’ air quality days in 2019, with an increase in such days to 113 in 2020 and 109 in 2021.
AQI is represented by a yardstick ranging from 0 to 500. The higher the AQI value, the more polluted the air is and the greater the health risk. For example, an AQI value of 50 or less indicates good air quality, whereas an AQI value greater than 300 indicates hazardous air quality.
Except fewer moderate pollution days (95) in 2020, when there were more days of the pandemic-induced lockdown, the city witnessed more days of moderate pollution in 2019 (154) and 2021 (155), respectively.
When comparing various categories of air pollution days over a year, the city performed better than Kolkata and Delhi. Along with Hyderabad, Chennai and Mumbai have not experienced severe or extremely severe air pollution days in the last three years. However, the other two cities’ air quality was in the ‘poor’ category during the last three years. In the last three years, Delhi and Kolkata have experienced ‘severe’ and ‘extremely severe’ air pollution days. The AQI values of 100 or less are considered satisfactory. When AQI levels exceed 100, air quality becomes unhealthy, first for certain vulnerable groups, then for everyone as AQI levels rise.
