17-yr-old Dalit girl found hanging in welfare hostel | Hyderabad News

HYDERABAD: A 17-year-old Dalit student of Government Social Welfare Residential College at Imampet in Telangana’s Suryapet district was found hanging in her hostel on Saturday night. The girl was a resident of Suryapet town. While prima facie it appeared to be a suicide, the family has alleged foul play.
Cops said the girl had participated in a farewell party on the hostel campus and then went to her room to change clothes.Later, she was found hanging in the room. The girl had backlogs and was also physically weak, police said and they suspect it could have led her to take the extreme step.
The death comes a week after two Dalit girls were found hanging in their hostel room on February 4 at a government hostel in Bhongir, allegedly following an altercation with juniors. In an alleged suicide note retrieved from their room, the girls stated they were ‘scared’ and ’embarrassed’ about being reprimanded over the fight. The case is still being probed as parents of the girls alleged foul play.
In this case too the student’s parents alleged foul play and staged a protest near the hostel campus.
On Saturday, the girl had asked her parents to get her a sari as it was the dress code for the farewell. Around 7.30 am, her father came to the hostel, gave her a sari and other belongings and left the place. Later, around 7.30pm, she made a video call to her mother from a staff’s mobile and spoke to her about the event.
Her father told the media that they asked her about how the party was going on and she was very happy with it.
“She said they made biryani for them and was in a joyous mood. Sometime later, the hostel staff called informing me that she was ill and asked me to come to the government hospital. When I went there, she was lying dead,” he said.
The father alleged something had happened at the hostel and that his daughter could not have taken her own life.
“How can someone who was very happy during the event end her life so suddenly?” he asked.
Suryapet DSP P Nagabhushanam told TOI that while the event was on the girl went to the room saying she would change and return in a few minutes.
“A few minutes later, another girl also went to change and found the victim hanging. The college staff rushed her to hospital, but she was declared dead on arrival,” he added.
A case of suspicious death under Section 174 of the CrPC has been registered based on a complaint from her parents, he said.
