57% spike in cybercrime a worrying trend in Telangana | Hyderabad News

HYDERABAD: The overall crime rate in the state has increased by 4.4% and the jump is manily because of a massive 57% rise in cybercrime according to Telangana police.
At the annual press meet on Thursday, DGP M Mahendar Reddy said that for the year 2022 the overall conviction rate was 56%, and among these conviction cases, 152 led to life imprisonment.
When asked about the high court’s recent order in the Poachgate case about leaking evidence to the chief minister, the DGP, who is set to retire on Saturday, refused to comment by claiming the matter is sub judice.

While explaining about the number of cases in which CCTV footages were referred to as evidence in criminal cases, he said that 18,234 cases were solved using CCTV footage. The police report said that sexual jealousy and family disputes were the prime reasons for murder cases in Telangana during the year.
“About 2,126 rape cases were registered during the current year 2022,” the police said. “These cases have been analysed to ascertain the offender relation and proximity to the victim. We found that rapes were committed by unknown persons only in nine cases. In the remaining 2,117 cases, victims were raped by either close family members, friends, lovers or colleagues,” the police said, while highlighting the decline in the number of rape cases.
“This year, there has been a rise in robberies, burglaries, thefts, kidnap, cheating and cybercrime cases,” the police said.
The report by police also pointed out the rising instances of cybercrime cases, which saw the number jump from 8,839 in 2021 to 13,895 in 2022.
