Residents of Deepthisri Nagar hold protest demanding relocation of dumpyard near Regulagunta lake in Miyapur on Sunday

HYDERABAD: The agitation to shift the Madinaguda dumping yard transfer station from Chandanagar in the west zone is only getting intense with residents of Deepthisri Nagar holding a protest on Sunday morning against the pollution generated by the transfer station.
Over 150 citizens from the colony including children and senior citizens take out the rally, blocking roads to prevent the GHMC garbage trucks from entering the area to dump the waste. The elderly blocked the trucks physically in a bid to lodge their dissent.
Their primary focus was on the polluted water from the exposed dumping yard entering the Regulagunta lake. “The lake is a historic natural lake spreading across 17.5 acres and since the garbage transfer station came up here, the rainwater runoff from the same is entering into the lake with all the toxic chemicals and wastewater,” said Busani Prakash Varma, a senior citizen from the area.
The residents fear that the already worsened groundwater contamination will become lethal if the transfer station is not relocated.
“Over 300 trucks are coming daily to dump the waste here. This waste is not just from Madinaguda but also from areas beyond HITEC city and Jubilee Hills. When a private company has been given a task to manage this, why is it being done so badly and unscientifically,” asked another angry resident.
The protest began 15 days ago, with banners across the colony demanding GHMC garbage trucks to keep away.
Meanwhile, it is learned that the Irrigation department officials visited the lake only to break open the bund and drain the accumulated waters.
“These are temporary measures like breaking bund and making a fence. The real issue is the diversion of sewage and the entering of waste chemical water from the garbage dump, which hasn’t been resolved,” added Varma.
