HYDERABAD: The hike in diesel price has impacted not only essential commodities but also seasonal fruits particularly mango, the king of fruits. Other fruits like watermelon, muskmelon and sweet lime have also become dearer.
Traders say the mangoes, which have started arriving at the city fruit markets, will be expensive this summer with the diesel price going up on almost daily in the last five days.
The cost of watermelon per kg is 20 to 30 while muskmelon is sold for 25 to 30 per kg. After Ugadi, mangoes will begin flooding the city markets.
Traders told TOI that if the daily trend in increase in fuel prices continues, mangoes will go out of the reach of the middle classes.
