HYDERABAD: Union minister of state for home Ajay Kumar Mishra said the inmate population in 1,306 prisons in India is 4. 88 lakh as against the available capacity of 4. 14 lakh.
He was replying to questions raised by Malkajgiri MP A Revanth Reddy of the Congress. As per the written reply, the highest number of prisoners of 1. 07 lakh are in the jails of Uttar Pradesh followed by 51,934 in prisons of Bihar, 45,484 in Madhya Pradesh, 31,825 in Maharashtra, 22,063 in Rajasthan and 25,863 in West Bengal prisons.
In 37 prisons in Telangana, the inmate population is 6,114 as against the capacity of 7,845.
In several other prisons, the inmate capacity is more than the actual available capacity.
The minister also informed that the MHA had released Rs 1. 70 crore in 2017-18, Rs 1. 38 crore in 2018-19 and Rs 1. 30 crore in 2019-20 for e-prisons project, computerisation of prison operations and digitalisation of prison records in Telangana.
The Telangana government has also submitted the utilisation certificates of the financial assistance extended to it to the ministry, Mishra added.
