Rajya Sabha seats: Vinod Kumar, others in contention in Telangana | Hyderabad News

HYDERABAD: With the budget session over, TRS president K Chandrasekhar Rao is likely to focus on party activities again. Nearly a dozen leaders are eyeing a berth in the Rajya Sabha. Three vacancies in the Rajya Sabha from the state are expected to be filled in the next two months.
While two Rajya Sabha members Captain V Lakshmikantha Rao and D Srinivas are retiring in June first week, the other seat fell vacant following the resignation of Banda Prakash who has been nominated to the legislative council in December last year.
Sources in the TRS said while Captain Lakshmikantha Rao may not be re-nominated to the upper house in view of his advancing age (84 years). Srinivas, who has stayed away from the party activities for the last four years due to differences with the party leadership, is likely to quit the party officially any time soon.
Among the aspirants and the names being considered by the party, according to sources, include former MP and vice-chairman of Telangana State Planning Board B Vinod Kumar. He is on the top of the list who is expected to be sent to the upper house. Vinod Kumar was deputy party floor leader in Lok Sabha when he represented Karimnagar constituency between 2014 and 2019. He lost to BJP’s Bandi Sanjay Kumar in 2019 elections. Vinod Kumar, who has been taking care of party activities in Delhi, often accompanies KCR during his meetings with national-level leaders like Sharad Pawar, Subramanian Swamy and others.
Others in contention are former minister Motkupalli Narasimhulu, former MP Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy, former waqf board chairman MA Saleem and ex-minister Mandava Venkateshwara Rao.
Narasimhulu, who joined the TRS a couple of months ago, has been moving closely with KCR and is seen in every meeting on Dalit Bandhu along with the CM. He is likely to get a chance as a Rajya Sabha MP. Srinivas Reddy, a former Khammam MP, was denied TRS ticket in 2019 elections. He had even tried for an MLC ticket. Now, he is hoping to represent as an MP in the upper house.
Saleem whose term ended recently is likely to be nominated under the minority quota if he does not get a second term as waqf board chairman. He had served as an MLC earlier.
