Hyderabad: Constant debris dumping choke Pariki Cheruvu | Hyderabad News
HYDERABAD: Incessant dumping of construction debris, over the last five months, has left the 76-acre Pariki Cheruvu in Kukatpally in a state of mess.
Worse, locals say, effluents flowing in from the Jeedimetla industrial area leads to regular frothing in the lake channel joining the Yellamma Cheruvu. While the issue has been raised with concerned authorities, it has failed to bring any respite to the water body.
According to residents, dumping of construction waste has been going on unabated on the Mahadevpuram, Kandrigutta and Shirdi Hills side of the lake since November 2021. Though the lake’s full tank level (FTL) and buffer limits were marked in 2012 — it was even listed as a protected site — about a 100-metre stretch along the lake bank at Mahadevpuram has already been levelled with debris. Beyond that, the lake is laden with overgrown water hyacinth that hasn’t been removed for months.
“This lake used to be a famous swimming spot for me and my friends during our childhood. Now, it stinks and you can’t even dip your finger,” said 37-year-old, Karigisetti Ravi Kumar.
In January, local resident, B Shiva Kumar had filed a complaint with the Lake Protection Committee and director of enforcement, vigilance and disaster management, Viswajit Kampati that led to some action.
A team from the EV&DM inspected the site and confirmed that ‘debris filling is being done in lake FTL limits and buffer limits’. In fact, Kampati even wrote a letter to the superintending engineer of lakes stating that the “illegal activity may cause loss of valuable asset and disturb the ecosystem and may further impose of inundation in its surroundings”.
“However, despite acknowledging my complaint, nothing has been done and the debris are discreetly being dumped between 3 am and 5 am even now. I have written to the Medchal district collector, Kukatpally zonal commissioner and the deputy zonal commissioner, only to receive meaningless acknowledgements,” Shiva Kumar said
