Australia vs England 2nd Test Day 1 live score updates: Australia opener David Warner missed a century by a whisker again as he followed up last week’s knock of 94 with a fine innings of 95 on the first day of the second Ashes Test in Adelaide on Thursday. Fellow batter Marnus Labuschagne hit a  half-century as Australia looked in command in the final session of the day. Earlier, veteran England pacer Stuart Broad struck early on his return as he dismissed opener Marcus Harris. This was after Australia captain Steve Smith won the toss and elected to bat first. The home side is without its newly-appointed Test skipper Pat Cummins as the all-rounder has been ruled out of the ongoing day-night fixture in Adelaide for being a close contact of a person who tested positive for COVID-19. Under South Australia’s strict bio-security rules, he will now isolate for seven days. Smith is leading the home side for the first time since a ball-tampering scandal in 2018 while debutant Michael Neser comes in as a replacement bowler for Cummins. The visitors will be hoping to level the series after losing at the Gabba and will need a better bowling performance, with James Anderson and Broad included in the playing XI. Skipper Joe Root will need some help from his other batters after a dismal batting display in Brisbane.

England Playing XI: Rory Burns, Haseeb Hameed, Dawid Malan, Joe Root(c), Ben Stokes, Ollie Pope, Jos Buttler(w), Chris Woakes, Ollie Robinson, Stuart Broad, James Anderson

Australia Playing XI: David Warner, Marcus Harris, Marnus Labuschagne, Steven Smith(c), Travis Head, Cameron Green, Alex Carey(w), Michael Neser, Mitchell Starc, Jhye Richardson, Nathan Lyon
